About Us

Green Bus Stops is run by the WNC Green Building Council, a non-profit in Asheville, North Carolina that promotes environmentally sustainable and healthy buildings through community education.  The WNCGBC organizes volunteers that donate their skills to design and build unique bus stop shelters throughout the City of Asheville’s transit system.

What Makes A Bus Stop Green?

  • Providing shelter for bus riders supports mass transit. There are approximately 600 bus stops in the city of Asheville that do not have protection from the elements and over a million riders every year.
  • Shelters can be built using green building techniques such as salvaged and recycled content materials, a green roof, solar panels and more.  Shelters made of durable materials require less maintenance and replacement, which conserves resources and money.
  • Local artists, architects, and builders showcase their talents, promote local businesses, and improve the quality of neighborhoods and streetscapes.  This reinforces Asheville as a center for vibrant communities, art, and green building innovation.
  • Citizens throughout the city are exposed to green building examples and the local businesses that helped make the shelter possible.
